This memorial carries the names of individuals who pushed the boundaries of Bosnian and Herzegovinian alpinism and sport climbing, as well as those who selflessly built the community and educated new generations.
A pioneer, initiator, and visionary whose energy paved the way for modern sport climbing in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina. His contribution to the development of climbing infrastructure, especially around Sarajevo, and his vision of climbing as a way of life continue to inspire climbers across the country.
Adnan Ćatić was born in Sarajevo in 1984 and discovered his passion for sport climbing at Dariva in the spring of 1998 together with Muhamed Šišić through the "Yeti" Climbing Club. From his very first contact with the rock, climbing became a lifelong passion that shaped an extraordinary sporting career.
After several years dedicated to outdoor activities, he decided in 2003 to pursue sport climbing professionally. He founded the Red Point Extreme Sports Club and quickly became one of the leading figures in promoting the sport throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. That same year, he became the first athlete to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina at the IFSC World Youth Championship in Bulgaria, finishing 29th in the speed climbing discipline among more than 290 competitors.
Throughout his career, Adnan achieved numerous successes at national, regional, and European competitions, earning prestigious titles and medals. He was crowned Bosnian and Herzegovinian National Sport Climbing Champion three consecutive times between 2004 and 2006, became the Serbian National Speed Climbing Champion in 2007, and earned two bronze medals at BWSC Paklenica in 2006 and 2007.
Beyond competition, Adnan made an exceptional contribution to the development of sport climbing through the organization of climbing courses, competitions, and the production of short films promoting the sport. He also built Bosnia and Herzegovina's first Dry Tooling training facility and actively prepared for the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.
His vision, dedication, and relentless enthusiasm left a lasting mark on the development of sport climbing in Bosnia and Herzegovina, inspiring generations of climbers who continue to follow the path he helped create.
One of the greatest Bosnian alpinists of all time, a climber who conquered some of the most demanding north faces in the Alps and proudly carried the title of top-level athlete. His courage, charisma, and love for the mountains remain a lasting inspiration for everyone who steps into the vertical world.
Armin Gazić was born in Zenica in 1991 and began his climbing journey at an early age. In 1999, together with his alpine and sport climbing instructor, Edin Durmo, he participated in a climbers' gathering in Paklenica, marking the beginning of an exceptional career.
Over the years, Armin established himself as one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most accomplished climbers. He became a multiple-time national champion in senior sport climbing and completed numerous demanding alpine and high-altitude ascents, including the north face of the Matterhorn (4,478 m), Denali (6,194 m), and Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895 m). Among his greatest achievements was the winter ascent of the Matterhorn's north face alongside his climbing partner Haris Kalajdžisalihović, a climb that secured its place in the history of Bosnian and Herzegovinian alpinism.
Armin also played an important role in developing the country's climbing infrastructure by helping equip some of the first Via Ferrata routes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including the more than 600-meter-long "Heart of Velež" Via Ferrata.
Throughout his life, he was an alpine instructor, sport climbing coach, devoted father, and an inspiring role model who passionately promoted a healthy lifestyle through countless outdoor adventures.
Although their lives followed different paths, Adnan and Armin shared the same passion and the same mission—to inspire others through climbing and to help grow the climbing community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Tragically, both lost their lives in remarkably similar circumstances, drowning in swollen rivers—Adnan in the Miljacka River, and Armin in the Neretva River near the Buna canals.
Today, their memorial plaques stand side by side at the Dariva climbing area, the place where they spent countless hours climbing, training, sharing ideas, and preparing for new adventures. It is here that their legacy continues to inspire every climber who follows in their footsteps.
